Gotta love that Windows security

I do enjoy reading things like this.

Brian Krebs on Safe Online Banking:

An investigative series I’ve been writing about organized cyber crime gangs stealing millions of dollars from small to mid-sized businesses has generated more than a few responses from business owners who were concerned about how best to protect themselves from this type of fraud.

The simplest, most cost-effective answer I know of? Don’t use Microsoft Windows when accessing your bank account online.

Layer Cake

This is just way cool.

Layers:
A $15 OS X app that takes a screenshot of your current desktop. The catch? The screenshot is saved as a PSD with layers for each application, window and desktop icon. (via cabel)

Spanning Sync

I’ve posted about this service previously, but they’ve come out with a referral program (you save $5, I make $5), as well as added the ability to sync your Address Book contacts with Gmail’s contacts, and it works VERY well. Just be sure if you want the latest & greatest to download the beta version.

Nifty little tool for Mac laptop users

Lifehacker is such a great website. For example, we’ve got this great app

Pause iTunes Whenever You Unplug Your Headphones with Breakaway:
breakaway.pngFreeware application Breakaway automatically pauses and resumes your iTunes music when you unplug or plug in your headphones, perfect for using your laptop in public places. Not only will the auto-pause prevent you from blaring music to everyone around you if you accidentally unplug your headphones, but you also won’t miss a beat if you step away with your headphones and then come back and plug in. Breakaway is freeware, Mac OS X only.

Stacks overlay for Leopard

Andy Ihnatko: What’s Leopard Really Worth?

It seems I’m merely relaying some other blog posts, but damn, this one is just too funny. Ihnatko’s humor is spot-on, and I like his analysis of how Leopard is about all the little things bundled together, as opposed to one single “killer app.”

Andy Ihnatko: What’s Leopard Really Worth?

I think the way to sum up the correct level of anticipation for Leopard is to compare it to a movie that stars Gene Hackman or Michael Caine. You know that it’s going to be worthwhile… but the coin’s in the air as to whether it’s worth seeing right away.

And my favorite quote:

And now we have the de-wussification of Mail. Mail was once a candy-apple red Mazda Miata. Now it’s a Ford pickup with a gun rack and a rear-window decal of a cartoon Calvin peeing all over the Microsoft Entourage icon.

I’m Such an Apple Fanboy

I don’t usually do this, but I just couldn’t resist being a fanboy.

146,000 iPhone Activations in First Two Days:

AT&T posted their 2nd Quarter earnings today and revealed some numbers on early iPhone sales.

Sales of the Apple iPhone have been robust. The June 29 launch allowed for less than two days of sales and activations before the end of the

Spanning Sync

Just wanted to put a little note in here about this excellent (but very beta) piece of software I’ve discovered for syncing iCal & Google Calendar bidirectionally called Spanning Sync. Finally, iCal & gCal can play nice!

[Full disclosure: This post has been edited so that clicking on that link will provide you with a $5 savings and me with a $5 credit from Spanning Sync]

Apple is an amazing company

So I’m definitely a big fanboy, but seriously, with a company as awesome as Apple, it’s hard not to be! I mean, come on, the iPhone is amazing! Not only that, but moving towards 802.11n wireless networking (5x as fast as the current 802.11g standard, with greater range), the Apple TV, and renaming the company to reflect the current trend towards creating & selling more than just computers. Very cool Apple, cheers!
