Maria McNeil Band @ Felt

Played a gig with the Maria McNeil Band this past Thursday at Felt, a club on Washington St, just north of the Theatre District here in Boston. While a decent place, it’s not my favorite venue to play, mostly because it was never intended for live music, the stage area is a bit tight & the crowd is usually just there for an after-work drink. Regardless, we had a good time, and it was the band’s first gig out. Maria’s had a group for some time, but this most current incarnation with myself on bass, Samad Kamali on keys, and Aaron Robertson on drums has only been around since this past November.

I’ve posted some pics up on flickr, but here’s a good one:

So yeah…

So I haven’t posted in over a month, which is a bit lame. Anyway, life has been a bit hectic. Doing classes full-time (16 credits folks), gigging weekly, occasional trips out-of-town for gigs or recreation, and on top of all that Amber moved in for the summer. So yeah, it’s been overwhelming, but in a good way, especially that Amber is here (no surprise I like my girlfriend, right?)

As for my previous entry, still a work in progress, but the Chet album slowly edges forward. Boston Common continues to gig every Thursday at Paddy O’s down by Faneuil Hall. And to anyone who reads this, feel free to leave comments, that’s what they’re there for.

Boston Common @ Paddy O’s

So, I haven’t posted in a while, sorry about that; the daily grind has been getting in the way of my intarwebs. Anyway, just a heads-up to anyone who’s reading this in the Boston area, but the cover band I’m in, Boston Common (warning, page is NSFW due to audio that loads on start, so mute your speakers before clicking) is continuing its weekly engagement at Paddy O’s tomorrow evening, from 9pm to 1:30am. 21+, no cover, and we play killin’ dance tunes all night long! Hope to see some new folks there!

T T the Bear’s

Taking the stage at TT’s this Wednesday with Chet. The Fens and Dann Russo & the Whiskey will be joining us, so come on out for a rockin’ good time! Doors at 8:30pm, 18+, and $7

Gig-tastic

That’s right folks, this month is gig-tastic. Every Thursday (starting this Thursday) Boston Common is at Paddy O’s, with occasional gigs at The Tap. Chet has two gigs this month, both 18+, and Matt Germak Band has a gig at Sweetwater at the end of the month.

So come on out & enjoy some of my shows!

Cool new band

Just want to let everyone know they need to check out The Ascetic Junkies as soon as possible; they’re a really fun bluegrass/folk group that just got started here in Boston, having played their first gig Wednesday night opening for Chet.

Chet @ the Paradise!

Chet is going to be at the Paradise Lounge this Sunday, Feb 18, at 7pm, and the show is 18+! So come on out & party down with us!

Harpers last night

Played Harpers Ferry last night with the Matt Germak Band, had a great gig, even if the cold kept most people at home. Some die hard fans came (Megan, Liz, Dann Russo, you guys rock!) Luke Eriksen & The Juice opened for us, both of them put on a good show. I especially dug The Juice’s choice of covers; definitely not easy to pull of RHCP or Sublime, but they did a damn fine job.

On another note (hah!) I have the weekend off musically, & will be renting a car & heading down to Connecticut to see my mom & sis, as they’ll be there to inquire about an internship/job for Morgan this summer. As much as I love playing, and getting paid, it’s nice to have some time off from that. Anyway, that’s all for now

Gigs a plenty

I’m sure anyone who happens to be reading this has noticed that the upcoming.org panel in the sidebar continues to be full of gigs, which is, as always, a Good Thing™. Boston Common, being the working cover band, is the busiest of the three groups I’m in, but Chet has 3 shows coming up this month & in March, and the Matt Germak Band has a headlining gig at Harpers Ferry next Wednesday! So that’s very cool, as Harpers is one of the best gigs in town (alongside the Paradise Lounge, TT the Bear’s, and the Middle East Upstairs). Chet will be at the Revolution Rock Bar, which is this pretty hip new joint downtown, on Wed the 21st.

As for other things, just finished the second week of classes; gonna be one hell of a semester, but I’ll get it done. Ready to finish up Berklee, have my degree, and make a move on some things I’ve had in mind for a while. Putting together a working jazz band (probably piano/bass/drums, with a trumpeter & vocalist) is something I’ve wanted to do for a long while, and I’ve had some folks in mind for some time for it…

And now, a word from our sponsors…

But seriously, I suppose I should make this thing more professional, since that’s the whole idea behind it. So now, I’ll speak about the bands I just saw tonight with my friend Liz. Amazing. My friend Jess is the frontwoman for Via Audio, and I went out to catch her group opening for the excellent band Walter & the Orange Ocean, along with a band I didn’t even know was on the bill, Elizabeth & the Catapult, who were amazing. Seriously, go and see this band, buy their EP, they’re absolutely riveting live. Without knowing who she was, as she walked by me at one point (before their set), I remarked “hey, I know you! Where have we met? No idea? Must have been some Berklee party..” then watched as she walked onstage & proceeded to rock my face off. Oops. Not to forget my friend Jess, Via Audio was grand, and I was especially impressed by their bass player as well. Knowing that he attended Berklee, I figured that he must have either had a class or taken lessons with Danny Morris, as he has that nice thumpy “Motown” sound happening at various intervals throughout their set. Definitely my favorite bass tone, so kudos to him.

After Elizabeth & co. finished up, I headed towards the back, ostensibly to avail myself of the facilities, and ran into her bassist, Matt Wigton, who I definitely enjoyed watching & listening to, as a fellow upright/electric bass player. We geeked out for a while about bass, music, jazz, & the live music scenes in Boston & NYC, then listened as Walter & the Orange Ocean really got into the meat of their set.

So yeah, I had a good night (best exemplified by the fact that I’m posting this at about 4:30am.
