Kept meaning to send this out sooner, but oh well. A band I play with is playing at Precinct, which is at 70 Union Sq., Somerville tonight.
The whole night starts at about 8pm, we go on at 10:15pm sharp, cover is $5 (and it all comes our way, so you’d be supporting us directly!)
We play a mix of R&B, reggae, and jazz, and tonight it’s Richard Matra on tenor sax, Keith Cornella & Neil Itzler on guitars, myself on bass and Tony Hall on drums.
Hope to see you there!

[Edit: So it seems that this never posted properly. I’m reposting it again, all fixed up. Enjoy!]
So I decided to go with my idea to write album reviews of albums that, while not necessarily new, are either new to me or just so damn amazing that I just have to share my opinion of them. On the plate for today is The Roy Hargrove Quintet’s latest release, Earfood.
Now, as with every release by Hargrove, it’s his trumpet tone & technical skill that really shine here. Let’s take a moment to revel in that tone. Buttery, a bit dark, but not to the point of being muted. Definitely a player who has his own sound, but you can hear a blend of Clifford Brown & Miles in there.
As for the album, it tends to alternate between mid– and uptempo pieces & ballads, which I’ve always found to be a great program for a jazz album. I won’t examine every tune, but “I’m Not So Sure” and “Strasbourg/St. Denis” are two favorites among the uptempo numbers, and “Starmaker” is definitely my favorite amongst the ballads.
So, final opinion is that this is a great outing by a really tight group, one of the best around today in jazz. Hargrove has really nailed it with this one.
Trying out blogging from my iPhone; pretty nifty. I’m currently sitting by gate B10 in Logan Airport, waiting to board my 10:30 flight to Roanoke via Philly. My sister’s graduating from college tommorrow, which is just unbelievable to me. Then in June, she moves to NYC! Crazy stuff. Not only that, but my brother is graduating high school on 3 weeks, and a buddy of mine is getting married 2 weeks after that! Momentous occasions this spring, to be sure.
But right now, I’m exhausted from a couple of sleep-deprived nights. Helped my friend Christine with two final projects this week, both followed by early mornings. Currently running on about 4–5 hours of sleep. No fun. Hopefully I can catch some z’s on the plane.
On another note, the jazz group Ellie & I are trying to start may finally have the kick in the ass it needs: a gig. Well see how that turns out.
My friend Adriane Yeager, a vocalist, is working on a 3 song demo of her jazz singing, & asked me to play some upright bass on the recordings, which is very cool, as I haven’t played any jazz in a while. Definitely be cool to get back in the studio with the big bass. I’ll post links to listen to the recordings when she gets them to me.
You know, it was SO easy to stay up until 4am last night after seeing some awesome funk being played down at Wally’s, but tonight I’m having trouble getting to just 2am tonight, much less PLAYING for an hour or two when i get there. Need…caffeine…
But on the note of that Wally’s excursion last night, holy SHIT! Saw Sam Kininger’s band playing with this ridiculous keys player I’ve known here & there around Berklee; turns out he’s been touring with Brian McKnight & is about to head out on tour with Stanley Clarke. Whoa. Their pocket was DEEP. And I mean DEEEEEEEP.
But now I really need to go find stimulants of some sort.
Must. Have. CAFFEINE.
