So we’re back together. Yeah, I know, we’re being a yo-yo couple, but seriously, things are good now. The whole “breakup” was very cathartic for Amber; she let go of a whole ton of anger & bitterness that was eating away at both of us. We both feel like a huge weight is gone, & we can be more open & genuine than we have in a long time. So, just like for me the breakup over the fall was good for me to sort things, so was this one for her (albeit, thankfully, much shorter).

Even more important for me, she’s using the word “love” again, which is huge. Fear gets in the way of so much…

I Love her very dearly (yes, that’s a capital “L”) & I want everyone to know!

We broke up.

The last few months have been a struggle. Certainly I was, and still am, glad to have her back in my life. The silence that existed without her was deafening. But the mistrust, the constant struggle, it blotted out the sunshine our relationship needed to flourish & grow again.

I certainly sowed the seeds of that mistrust long ago, and I tried to uproot that foul growth & replace it with something, anything, that was better.

Instead, after two heart-wrenching arguments, we let it go.

I’m sad, and angry, that I couldn’t make things better, but most of all I’m worried about her. She is very much not ok, and awkward as it may be, I want to be there for her, even if I am “just” a friend now.

A friend of mine I shared this with already read her post on this topic, and it offers more insight into why things didn’t grow & heal. Please feel free to read & comment there as well as here if you like.

[Ed. note – I wrote this Sunday on the plane back from Charlotte, but forgot to publish it right away.]

Turns out that on an E190, the row of seats directly in front of the emergency row do NOT recline. In fact, they seem to be even more upright, if anything. So, if you like to doze on planes, don’t sit here!

As for my time spent with my parents, had a great time! Spent some time at the stables with my mom, helping a little bit more with their computers, then got in some horseback riding on Saturday. Definitely sore, but it was great; haven’t ridden in years. Thursday & Friday night was spent just hangin’ out watching movies; Thursday we just watched whatever was on, but Friday we rented Body of Lies from the iTunes Store, a great movie!

Saturday night was the best though: my friends Joe, Matt, Greg, Tim, Tom, & John, along with his wife Catherine, came over for dinner. My mom prepared steaks, fettuccine, salad, & shrimp which was delicious, & we popped open a bunch of great wine, courtesy of my father’s always excellent purchases. The last time I had a bunch of these guys together was on my 21st birthday, back in 2004, and it was even better this time! Everyone spilled in regards to their lives recently, which was great, as I haven’t caught up with a few of them in a while. Got a chance to hear my buddy Tom’s jury, as he had a DVD copy of it in his car, & the night was just filled with laughter. Hopefully, I’ll get to see each of them sooner rather than later, especially since a few of them are big on coming up for a Sox game!

Only thing that would have made it better is if Amber could have been there, but she’s kicking ass getting ready to graduate! She’s wicked excited that the end is in sight, & we’re looking for a job for her in Boston. Hopefully in biology/medicine (that’s her field), but with the job market as it is, any decent gig would be good for now. So if any of you silent readers (come on, comment already!) know of an opportunity, please get in touch with me.

Alright, now to try & doze some more in this damn seat.

From NYTimes Blog Domestic Disturbances article “Tears to Remember”:

Two images will forever stay in my mind to mark this epoch-breaking Election Day. One is that of Jesse Jackson’s face, drenched in tears, in Chicago’s Grant Park on Tuesday evening.

And the other is a photo that ran in The Times on Wednesday. In it, a black mother and daughter sit on the floor of a church in Harlem. The mother, Latrice Barnes, having heard of Obama’s victory, is doubled up in tears; her daughter, Jasmine, is reaching a tentative hand up to soothe her. To me, she looks like the future, reaching out to heal the past.

I can’t take credit for finding this one; that goes to Amber, but I’m really glad she shared it. Hit that link & read the whole thing, it’s magnificent.
